Master’s Degree of Chemistry Teaching: connecting research and didactics

A stake for “Educadora de Educadores” is to continue working for a high-quality postgraduate training impacting and expanding growth chances not only for teachers but also for their students.

This is how the master’s program of Chemistry Teaching addresses didactics of this discipline, encouraging research and teaching practice in the classroom, including most often the definition of interdisciplinary issues.

The coordinator, Yair Porras, explains that such an academic proposal has high-quality accreditation, besides a qualified registration and thirty-five uninterrupted years of work, training teachers who are prominent in the institutions where they work.

This training by means of critical reading aims to transform the reality of scenarios where teaching takes place from chemistry and experimental sciences distinctly reaching the classrooms.

Carlos Javier Mosquera, graduated in this program in 1989 and part of the second graduating class, considers a historical time in Colombia, developed in the 80's when this type of programs had just been implemented in our country, giving a significant qualitative jump that allowed a distinctive look at science education.

In fact, it seeks to train professionals with leadership competence to link the relationship between teaching and applied research with methodological skills to join theory and practice in a certain social context, impacting the chemistry training of new generations.

The graduated Laura Páez, thanks to this program in 2018, found a door to better job chances, which allowed her to apply new learning processes, deepening her knowledge of laboratory management and research, among other topics. Additionally, giving her an option to get a wage increase and working in Germany.

The Master's Degree of Chemistry Teaching of the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional (UPN) seeks to consolidate itself as a postgraduate program, by leading research of chemistry didactics in our country and contributing to international research in this field.

According to Luigi Cuellar, who completed his master’s degree in 2004 from different areas of preparation of this program, there are chances for further development at didactic and research level, which let him after a Ph.D. in Chile. From his point of view, this path led him to strengthen his identity as a researcher in the realm of chemistry teaching.
