Admission

By which the Academic Council recognizes that an applicant has a right to attend an academic training program.

Interdisciplinary meeting areas that describe the knowledge, identity, relevance and social image of each future teacher.

 

Spanish teaching assistants at the University of the West Indies at Trinidad and Tobago

A program that allows the student to join the University of the West Indies as a Spanish teaching assistant for two semesters. It promotes the improvement of the second language and knowledge of the academic, linguistic and cultural issues of both parties.

 

Total cancellation of registration

It is the registration adjustment where the student decides to cancel all the academic subjects.

 

Secondment 

A staff professor is on secondment when he/she temporarily performs his/her functions in places other than his/her usual place of work; carries out special missions; or attends academic events. Also, when he/she attends events invited by foreign governments; international organizations; or national or foreign, public or private institutions; or attends observation missions relevant to the institution.

  

Agreement

A concurrence of wills with the purpose to join forces in order to achieve a common goal. It is structured through commitments and the parties make contributions during their implementation. 

 
Cooperation Agreement

A written agreement where the University is joined to other national or foreign bodies or legal entities, whether public, private or mixed, in order to develop one or more activities together, which result in cooperation commitments.

 

National Partnership Agreements

Agreements signed with external national institutions, whether public or private, in order to develop together one or more activities resulting in cooperation commitments.
 

International Framework Partnership Agreements 

Those containing general commitments but require specific agreements or contracts that meet independently and autonomously the goal and purposes of the respective agreement.
 

External call

Documents through which a body outside of the University invites certain players of the university community to participate in order to develop research projects. 

 

CvLAC

Acronym of Curriculum Vitae Latinoamericano y del Caribe. It is the résumé of researchers, innovators, academic scholars and skilled professionals of the national system in science, technology and innovation.

 

Doctor’s Degree

Advanced training studies whose goal is training researchers who will able to perform and guide autonomously the highest quality academic and research processes in several knowledge areas. 
 

Interview

It is a face-to-face meeting that allows a dialogical relationship between the applicant, following conditions established by the University, and the interviewers-professors in order to know something about the attitude and willingness by interviewee regarding education.

 

Academic subjects

Curricular proposals evaluated and based on guidelines established by each training program.

 

Specialization

Advanced training studies whose purpose is a qualification of the professional exercise and a development of competences to allow the improvement of the relevant task, profession, discipline, or related or supplementary areas.

 

Graduate’s folder examination

It is the required academic-administrative procedure to get a degree assuming the fulfillment of the relevant requirements.

 

Advanced Training Course

“The advanced training in education is carried out in Colombia through postgraduate programs at specialization, master, doctorate levels offered by higher education institutions, which involves a systematic process of learning and intellectual creation” (Ministry of National Education).

 

 Teaching Assessment 

An evaluation and description of mechanisms used by the professor planning and implementing the training processes besides the institutional conditions where they are developed. Students and teachers participate. 

 

Learning Assessment 

It is a numerical qualification to value student's progress and achievements during his/her training process.

 

External Assessment

It is the University quality measurement or its academic programs by reviewers peers from other institutions. Thus it seeks to obtain the Quality Accreditation by the Ministry of National Education.

 

On-going Assessment of Training Programs

An institutional, comprehensive and participatory process aimed at continuous improvement. It should generate changes regarding academic and management policies towards a self-regulation status.

 

GrupLAC

Software whose goal is to keep a directory with resumes of Colombian and foreign research groups at national level in science, technology and innovation.

 

Internationalization

A series of activities and projects aimed at strengthening relations with other universities and academic and pedagogical communities through networks and systems of internships and exchanges in order to take advantage of different possibilities both inside and outside the country to vigor an academic community with international standing. 

 

Bachelor 

A degree awarded for education professionals in Colombia, once they have approved undergraduate studies in a higher education institution; currently 5-year average.

 

Master's degree

Advanced training studies whose purpose is deepening a knowledge area and the skills development to solve problems or analysis of peculiar situations of a disciplinary, interdisciplinary or professional nature through uptake or internalize knowledge, methodologies and scientific, technological, or artistic advances. 

 

Enrollment

A voluntary act by which a student commits him/herself after signing to follow an academic training program, exercising all his/her rights and fulfilling all the duties pertaining to the student’s status. 

 

Curriculum

A series arranged of knowledge, disciplines, curricular contents and activities of each academic subject. It is organized by academic subjects, cycles and training environments, which have a minimum of credits. 

 

 

 

 

Pedagogical practice 

A reflection, action and research environment related to research and re-contextualization of cognitive, ethical, pedagogical, didactics and disciplinary knowledge within a particular sociocultural context. 

 

 

 

  

Lecture at international events 

A program that promotes lodging and transporting students who have lectures submitted at international events, previously endorsed by the relevant Department and Faculty. 

 

 

 

Professional practice 

Program that facilitates the insertion of the student in national or foreign institutions or companies in order to carry out a period of time of educational and research practices related to the theoretical training. 

 

 

 

 

Postgraduate training programs

 

Regular advanced training studies. 

 

 

 

 

Undergraduate training programs

 

Specific subjects devoted to reception and production of knowledge of all educational levels and types related to teacher’s training.

 

 

 

 

 

Professor

 

A teacher who performs academic teaching activities for undergraduate and/or postgraduate programs, but he/she simultaneously or alternatively is involved in research, outreach, institutional management activities and those ones set by other supplementary rules. 

 

 

 

 

 

Staff Professor 

A scholar hired by public merit-based contest of who is in probationary period or the teaching career. 

 

 

 

 

 

Occasional Professor

A scholar hired by selection of merits for a period of time of less than a year according to the needs of the service.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Lecturer

A scholar hired for hours by selection of merits for an academic period of time according to the needs of the service. Usually, a professor working up to 16 hours per week. 

 

 

 

 

Full-time contract professor

A staff professor who is committed to carry out all of his/her work exclusively to the University and, consequently, cannot have any other labor relationships or contracts for services with other public or private institutions. 

 

 

 

 

Full-time professor

A staff or occasional professor working 40 hours per week. 

 

 

 

 

Part-time professor

A staff or occasional professor working 20 hours per week. 

 

 

 

 

Auxiliary Professor

A staff professor with university degree and accredited two years of skilled professional experience or proved outstanding performance during his/her undergraduate studies.

 

 

 

 

Assistant Professor

A staff professor who has met the requirements to become an auxiliary professor and the other requirements established by the University Professor Statute of the UPN (Agreement 038 of 2002 of the Higher Council). 

 

 

 

 

Associate professor

A staff professor who has fulfilled the duly requirements to become an assistant professor and the other requirements established by the University Professor Statute of the UPN (Agreement 038 of 2002 of the Higher Council).

 

 

 

 

 

Senior Professor

A staff professor who has met the requirements required to become an associate professor and the other requirements established by the University Professor Statute of the UPN (Agreement 038 of 2002 of the Higher Council).  

 

 

 

 

Non-formal academic programs

Non-degree programs for educational purposes, such as certified courses, free courses, workshops, seminars and congresses, among others. 

 

 

 

 

Research programs

Particular research projects related to national and international educational issues, which are submitted and implemented by Faculties, Institutes and Research Center of UPN (CIUP), following their specific regulations. 

 

 

 

 

Accumulated weighted average

A result after dividing the sum of the products of the scores of all the academic subjects taken during the career according to the amount of credits by the sum of the total completed credits. 

 

 

 

 

Semi-annual weighted average

A result after dividing the sum of the products of the scores of each academic subject according to the amount of credits by the sum of the total completed credits by the student during the relevant academic semester. 

 

 

 

Specific test

A test to measure general knowledge regarding a bachelor's degree an applicant wants to register as a basic part of the selection process.

 

 

 

Additional test

A test applied replacing a partial or final evaluation, i.e. when a student has failed to take it by force majeure or an accidental event.

 

 

 

Academic registration

An act by which in each academic period, the student registers the subjects that he/she undertakes to attend, following the established procedures.

 

 

 

Field trip

Every academic activity carried out on the nationwide that requires support to its start-up.

 

 

 

Academic semester abroad

A program which allows the student to take a semester in a university abroad. Admission can be got by inter-institutional agreements but does not involve reciprocity, except homologation and recognition of the course. Students may apply following two annual notices posted by the Office of Inter-Institutional Relations (ORI).

 

 

SIGAN (Integrated System of Standardized Academic Management)

An academic system which allows the University to heighten the development of the academic-administrative processes. 

 

 

 

Readmission

A new admission given to the student who has lost his/her status for a period of time not exceeding one year but he/she wants to continue his/her studies. It shall be granted only once.

 

 

 

Re-entry 

A type of re-entry to the University which a student may request after a previous total register cancellation approved, or a place reservation made.

 

 

 

Place reservation 

A register adjustment which consists of the enrolment reservation authorized by the Faculty Council to an admitted applicant who because of events duly certified cannot begin his/her studies. 

 

 

 

Reference terms

A document containing the specifications and requirements about the scope of external notices and their relevant implementation. 

 

 

Research Master's Thesis 

A research whose methodological thoroughness reflects the acquisition of scientific competences suitable to skilled academic knowledge, which may be applied to a specific study as a result of new pedagogical knowledge and processes supported by technological instruments and procedures. 

 

 

 

Advanced Master's Thesis 

A research applied to a case study, which offers a solution for a specific problem or analysis of an actual event related to issues under research by a certain group involved. 

 

 

 

Specialization thesis

A thesis focused to examine a certain study by collecting and processing information, or producing a monograph related to one of the issues under research, otherwise a proposal to improve the professional career.
 

 

 

Transferring

An admission given to those applicants who wish to continue their studies at the University, after started them in another institution of higher education duly recognized by the State, or after finished them in a Higher Normal School with which the University may have an agreement. 

 

 

 

Internal transfer

A transfer to a program other than that current one by any regular undergraduate student of the UPN who has also passed at least two (2) semesters.
